"I mentioned the dollars first because we're much more focused on the dollars that the savings will create, than the number of heads," Goldman's CFO David Viniar told analysts on a conference call in July, after Goldman layed off several thousand employees.

It's always a great opportunity to come together with people that have a "forward thinking" vision. Sharing what has worked, what hasn't, & what motivates us -when it comes to keeping ourselves & our greatly appreciated volunteer base coming back for more- was very inspiring! Such a variety of different needs across organizations presents a perfect broad window of options for incoming volunteers to choose just the right fit for them. How to get them all in one place, all at one time.. that's always the question that gets us brainstorming! Ideas generated from the group at this meeting is a wonderful starting point and I look forward to being a part of making this unfold in a mutually beneficial manner for the organizations AND the volunteers! Thank You, Roger, for putting this together & Thank You, Sue, for arranging the provisions & luncheon at SCC!

Thanks Don - I am very glad for your presence with this group of Executive Directors and volunteer leaders - we all have much to learn from working together - and playing - in this arena!

I was moved and inspired by the coming together of people of our community determined to connect with one another and make a positive difference for people unable to cope with the numerous social, financial and personal challenges of modern times. I was particularly taken by the character, integrity and motivation of those present, and look forward to working...and, as much as possible, playing...together as we find and implement ways of creating better, safer and more cooperative communities. Having such professional tools as this website and related services, I must add, will make a substantial difference in the eventual outcome.

After years facilitating organizational change, we've developed a unique approach that maximizes our effect and minimizes waste. It took a lot of hard work to get to this point and it's a pleasure to reread it all on a single web page.

So, how do you work?

It may seem excessively soft and silly to some, but we find that treating everyone, including volunteers, with love, honor, and respect leads to miracles.

We invite you to share your stories of miracles in your organization born of love, honor, and respect!

It's no surprise that we can learn a great deal about building successful volunteer programs from the best practices of HR.

On the other hand, it's an interesting mystery why few companies and even fewer volunteer programs actually apply these best practices.

So often we see organizations struggling with big missions and little budgets - lots of clients in need and not much staff to address that need. It does not have to be like this.

So often we see volunteers struggling to find outlets for expressing their passion and desire to make a difference - to connect with people and have fun. It does not have to be like this.

What does your organization do to build capacity to serve your clients? Do you love your volunteers?

Ok, we're ready for your comments.

How do you build capacity in your organization?

How do you foster sustainability?

How do you use meaningful conversation to move action forward?

We're looking forward to reading your responses - thanks for the work you do! Roger
